Exercise and staying fit.
Obesity rates in our youth have tripled in the last decade. Childhood obesity causes elevated counts of cholesterol and liver disease due to insulin resistance and pre-diabetes which is a condition that effects the overweight youth. Many of our youth have a decrease in self-esteem, depression, anxiety, emotional and mental trauma caused by childhood obesity. It is very important to educate our youth about the importance of exercise and staying fit.
The causes of obesity are complex and include genetic, biological, behavioral and cultural factors. It’s very simple, obesity occurs when a person eats more calories than the body burns up. If the parents are obese, the children have a 60 percent chance of being obese. Obesity most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 4 and 6. A child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult according to recent studies. Medical disorders can cause obesity and should be monitored by a physician. Youth should have a medical evaluation by a physician before starting any physical activity.
